Suprovat Sydney report: The Bangladeshi Diaspora in Sydney will present “July ’24: The Story of a Generation,” a two-day public exhibition commemorating the July 2024 student-led uprising in Bangladesh. To be held on 7–8 August 2026 at the LFC Centre in Lakemba, the exhibition will honour those who lost their lives, those whose lives were forever changed, and the resilience of a generation whose story continues to shape Bangladesh’s future.
The exhibition is among the first initiatives of its kind organised by the Bangladeshi diaspora to document, preserve and publicly share the events of July 2024 through art, photography, personal testimonies and historical storytelling. It seeks to create a lasting record of one of the most significant moments in Bangladesh’s recent history while providing a space for remembrance, reflection and community dialogue.
For many Bangladeshi Australians, the events of July 2024 were deeply personal. During the internet and media blackout, families across Australia spent days anxiously waiting for news from Bangladesh, unable to contact loved ones or confirm their safety. While the movement unfolded thousands of kilometers away, its emotional impact was felt profoundly throughout the Bangladeshi diaspora.
Through carefully curated displays, visitors will be invited to reflect on the courage, sacrifice and resilience demonstrated during the movement. The exhibition will feature stories of those who lost their lives, the experiences of survivors and families, artistic interpretations of the events, and the broader impact of the movement on communities both in Bangladesh and abroad.
Beyond commemorating the past, “July ’24: The Story of a Generation” aims to encourage dialogue between generations, preserve collective memory and foster a deeper understanding of the historical significance of July 2024 among younger members of the Bangladeshi Australian community and the wider Australian public.
Organizers hope the exhibition will serve as a place where members of the community can remember together, reflect on the human stories behind the events, and honour the enduring resilience of those whose lives were affected.
The exhibition is free to attend, and everyone is welcome.
