Hon Tony Burke MP visits ailing Bangladeshi community leader at Concord Hospital

Reported by Suprovat Sydney, on the evening of Thursday, 17 July, the Hon Tony Burke MP, Federal Minister for Home Affairs, paid a heartfelt visit to  Abul Bashar Khan at Concord Hospital, where the respected Bangladeshi‑Australian community leader has been receiving treatment for serious health issues.

Khan, affectionately known as “Bashar Khan” among local community members, has been a stalwart supporter of the Labor Party in Western Sydney for many years. As a committed volunteer, organiser, and advocate for Bangladeshi‑Australian representation, he has played a vital role in fostering community connections and supporting local initiatives.

During his hospital visit, Minister Burke remarked, “Abul has been a strong voice for multiculturalism and solidarity in our community. Tonight, I came simply to let him know we stand with him—and the many families he has supported over the years.”

Community leader Farook Hannan, prominent businessman Enamul Huq, and Salim Lokiyot were also among those visited by Hon Tony Burke MP during his visit to seriously ill Abul Bashar Khan.

However, it reflects Minister Burke’s long-standing commitment to accessible healthcare and multicultural engagement—priorities he has championed through advocacy for funding such as the new Urgent Care Clinics in Bankstown and Belmore, and major upgrades to Canterbury and Bankstown hospitals.

Tragically, on the same night, Abul Bashar Khan passed away. His funeral was held the following day at Lakemba Mosque, followed by his burial at Kemps Creek Muslim Cemetery. The community mourns the loss of a kind-hearted and devoted individual whose absence will be deeply felt.
