Since arriving in Australia in 1999, Masud has remained closely connected with the community. From the early years of his life in Australia, he devoted significant time and effort to helping others, particularly newly arrived migrants who were trying to establish themselves in a new country.

His community service has taken many forms. Over the years, he has assisted people with settlement challenges, employment opportunities, finding accommodation, accessing medical and other essential services, and navigating unfamiliar systems. His willingness to help people in practical ways has earned him considerable recognition and respect within the community.

Masud has demonstrated strong organisational and leadership abilities through his involvement with numerous community, student, business and trade organisations in New South Wales.

Over the years, he has held leadership roles with organisations including the Bangladesh Students Association at the University of Sydney, Bangladesh Association, Australian Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce, Australian Bangladesh Business Forum, Bangladesh–Australia Trade and Investment Council (BATIC), and Bangladeshi Association of New South Wales.

He has also been involved with organisations such as Rotary and Lions club, further reflecting his long-standing commitment to community and civic service. He has made significant contributions to our multicultural society by organising and supporting cultural events, community fairs, and other initiatives that bring diverse communities together and promote unity, inclusion, and cultural harmony.

Through these roles, he has organised and supported numerous community events, strengthened relationships between organisations, encouraged business and community engagement, and worked to build bridges between the Bangladeshi-Australian community and the broader Australian society.

His leadership philosophy has consistently focused on service: being present within the community, listening to people’s concerns and working towards practical solutions.

Masud came to Australia in 1999 after completing a Master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Dhaka.

He subsequently continued his education in Australia, graduating from Central Queensland University and undertaking further studies and professional courses in New South Wales. His areas of study and training have included teaching assistance, financial planning, mortgage broking and other diploma and certificate-level qualifications.

This combination of academic education, professional development and decades of practical community experience has contributed to his broad understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing multicultural communities in Australia.

Councillor Masud Khalil : Delivering for Campbelltown

As a Councillor of Campbelltown City Council, Masud Khalil has focused on practical initiatives aimed at strengthening local infrastructure, improving community facilities, enhancing safety and creating better opportunities for residents.

One significant area of advocacy has been Simmos Beach at Macquarie Fields, where he supported greater investment in facilities, recreation and tourism opportunities. His advocacy contributed to momentum surrounding the broader Simmos Beach Parklands development, including government investment and the $6.5 million Dharawal Nature Playspace.

His other council priorities and initiatives have included:

School Road Safety: Advocating for safer pedestrian crossings, school zones, walking routes and improved accessibility to protect children and families.

Minto Railway Station: Raising concerns with the NSW Government about the need for improved weather protection and accessibility for commuters.

Pickleball Facilities: Securing Council support to investigate opportunities for new Pickleball courts, suitable locations and potential State and Federal Government grant funding.

PhD Scholarship Program: Initiating an innovative program designed to connect university research with Campbelltown’s local challenges, opportunities and long-term development.

Pembroke Park: Advocating for greater accountability, regular progress updates and improved communication with the community regarding the park’s renovation.

Across these initiatives, his focus has been practical and results-oriented: attracting government funding and investment, improving local infrastructure and facilities, strengthening community safety and creating opportunities that benefit residents across Campbelltown.

A Significant Milestone

Masud achieved an important milestone when he became Deputy Mayor of Campbelltown City Council, representing a significant achievement for the Bangladeshi-Australian community. He continues to serve the people of Campbelltown as an elected Councillor.

His journey from a university graduate in Bangladesh and a new migrant establishing a life in Australia, to a community organiser, business and trade advocate, and local government representative, reflects many years of persistence, community involvement and public service.

For almost three decades, Ibrahim Khalil Masud has worked alongside people from different backgrounds and generations. His experience demonstrates that effective community leadership is not simply about holding a title; it is about being accessible, listening to people, bringing communities together and turning community concerns into practical action.
