Suprovat Sydney report: Councillor Sylvia Alafaci has been elected Deputy Mayor of the City of Canada Bay, taking on a senior leadership role just two years after being elected to Council.
The appointment was confirmed at the City of Canada Bay Council meeting on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, at the Canada Bay Civic Centre in Drummoyne.
First elected as a Councillor in 2024, Cr Alafaci has become an active representative within one of Sydney’s most culturally diverse local government areas, with a particular focus on community engagement, multicultural affairs and stronger connections between residents, businesses and local government.
Her election as Deputy Mayor marks the latest chapter in a public and community career that has included extensive involvement with business organisations, multicultural communities and civic groups.
Cr Alafaci said the role carried both an honour and a responsibility, and she looked forward to continuing to represent residents across the City of Canada Bay while working closely with the Mayor, fellow Councillors and Council staff.
The City of Canada Bay encompasses established communities including Concord, Five Dock and Drummoyne, as well as rapidly growing centres such as Rhodes, and has experienced significant demographic and residential change in recent years.
Cr Alafaci’s community involvement extends beyond local government.
She is Secretary of the Australian Business Summit Council Inc. (ABSC Inc.), a not-for-profit organisation that promotes connections between Australian and international business communities and brings together representatives from business, government, diplomacy and community organisations.
Through the organisation, she has been involved in initiatives aimed at strengthening business and professional relationships and encouraging engagement between Australia’s diverse multicultural communities and international partners.
Cr Alafaci is also a co-founder of EKONOMOS, a business affairs publication featuring contributions from leaders in business, academia, diplomacy and the wider community.
Her broader community service has included involvement with Rotary and engagement with a range of multicultural and community organisations.
These roles have provided Cr Alafaci with extensive experience working across business, community and cultural networks, an approach she has also brought to her work in local government.
As Deputy Mayor, Cr Alafaci said she would continue to focus on listening to residents, supporting strong local communities and contributing constructively to the future development of the City of Canada Bay.
Her election represents a significant milestone in her public service and places her in a key leadership role as the City of Canada Bay continues to respond to population growth, changing community needs and the opportunities and challenges facing one of Sydney’s most diverse local government areas.
