Suprovat Sydney report : Canterbury-Bankstown’s Australia Day Awards celebrated locals who make a real impact in the community, including a volunteer supporting refugees, an optometrist helping the disadvantaged, and a young innovator behind a melanoma screening prototype.

Mayor Bilal El-Hayek praised the recipients, calling them “local heroes” who dedicate themselves to improving lives without seeking recognition.

The awards ceremony, held at the Bryan Brown Theatre, also recognised a public health advocate, a native vegetation protection group, and a community centre promoting inclusion.

The event marked the start of the Council’s Australia Day celebrations, which also saw 25 new citizens sworn in.

“What better way to kick off Australia Day than by honouring those who make our city a better place,” said Mayor El-Hayek.

Suprovat Sydney, Australia’s only Bangladeshi newspaper, extends heartfelt congratulations to these local heroes for their outstanding contributions to the community.
