Suprovat Sydney Report: A high-level delegation from Bangladesh’s National Defence College (NDC) paid a goodwill and study visit to Australia this month, marking another positive step in the growing relationship between Bangladesh and Australia.
The delegation arrived in Australia on 10 September 2026 and was led by Major General Md Masudur Rahman. It included senior officials and participants associated with the National Defence Course 2026.
The visit aimed to strengthen mutual understanding, professional cooperation and people-to-people relations between the two countries. It also provided the delegates with an opportunity to learn about Australia’s strategic outlook, defence institutions, security environment and approach to regional cooperation.
During the visit, the delegation engaged with relevant Australian representatives and institutions. Discussions reportedly covered areas of shared interest, including defence education, professional training, regional security, peacekeeping, disaster management and humanitarian assistance.
Australia and Bangladesh have maintained friendly diplomatic relations for more than five decades. Australia was among the first countries to recognise Bangladesh after its independence in 1971, establishing the foundation for a longstanding partnership.
In recent years, the two countries have expanded cooperation in defence, trade, education, development, maritime security and regional stability. Professional exchanges between their defence and strategic institutions have also contributed to stronger bilateral understanding.
Bangladesh is internationally respected for its significant contribution to United Nations peacekeeping missions. Its armed forces have extensive experience in peacekeeping, disaster response and humanitarian operations. Australia similarly plays an important role in regional security, maritime cooperation and international peace-support activities.
The visit therefore offered an important platform for exchanging knowledge and discussing contemporary security challenges. These include climate-related disasters, cyber threats, maritime security, humanitarian emergencies and the need to maintain peace and stability throughout the Indo-Pacific region.
The National Defence College, located at Mirpur Cantonment in Dhaka, is one of Bangladesh’s leading institutions for higher-level strategic and security studies. Its National Defence Course brings together senior officers from the armed forces, civil servants and participants from friendly foreign countries. According to information published about the 2026 course, its participants represent Bangladesh’s military and civil services as well as several partner nations.
Study visits form an important part of the NDC curriculum, giving participants first-hand exposure to the political, economic, diplomatic and security systems of partner countries. Such exchanges help future leaders develop a broader understanding of international affairs and build professional relationships across national boundaries.
The delegation’s Australian visit also carried special significance for the growing Bangladeshi-Australian community.
