Back in 2011, the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina did something terrible. They went after the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), and it ended tragically with 57 people from BDR losing their lives. This scared a lot of people and set the stage for some serious power grabs.

This alteration shifted the balance of power and raised concerns about the fairness of future elections.

Despite assurances of holding elections in 2013, scepticism remained as the government’s actions seemed to prioritize its own interests over democratic principles. Instead of fostering an environment of transparency and fairness, there were reports of intimidation and manipulation, with the security forces being utilized to maintain control.

The facade of democracy reached its nadir in the January 5, 2014, election, where a staggering 154 seats were won uncontested, leaving little room for doubt regarding the government’s intentions. The so-called opposition was marginalized, and the electoral process was reduced to a mere charade, with the outcome predetermined in favour of the ruling party.

Since then, Bangladesh has grappled with political uncertainty, exacerbated by the imprisonment of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia on charges that many view as politically motivated. This has further eroded public trust in the government and raised concerns about the future of democracy in the country.

As Bangladesh teeters on the brink of authoritarianism, the international community must not remain silent. The erosion of democracy in Bangladesh is not merely a domestic issue but a matter of global concern, as it threatens to undermine the stability of the region and the principles of democratic governance worldwide.

It’s time for other countries and groups around the world to speak up. We need to support the people of Bangladesh who want fairness, justice, and a real say in how their country is run. Bangladesh’s democracy is at a crossroads, and we can’t afford to let it go down the wrong path.
